Ziyarat in Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah

Al-Madinah al-Munawwarah

Al-Madinah al-Munawwarah (“the Enlightened City”) holds a most honored and sacred status in Islam, being the second holiest city after Makkah al-Mukarramah. It is the blessed city that welcomed and gave refuge to the Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), and the early Muslims upon their migration from Makkah. It is also the noble resting place of the Prophet (ﷺ), making it a source of immense spiritual significance and reverence for Muslims around the world.

Brief History of Madinah al Munawwarah

Al-Madinah al-Munawwarah holds a distinguished and revered place in Islamic history. Formerly known as Yathrib (یثرب), it became the City of the Prophet (ﷺ) after the blessed Hijrah (migration) of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) from Makkah. The people of Madinah welcomed the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and the early Muslims with faith and devotion, providing them protection and support at a critical moment in Islamic history.

In Madinah, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) established the first Islamic community based on justice, brotherhood, and worship of Allah alone. The construction of Masjid an-Nabawi marked the spiritual and social center of the city, while the Charter of Madinah laid the foundations for peaceful coexistence, mutual rights, and responsibilities among different communities.

Madinah was also the site of significant events that shaped Islam, including key moments of revelation, major expeditions, and the strengthening of the Muslim Ummah. After the passing of the Prophet (ﷺ), he was laid to rest in this blessed city, further elevating its sacred status.

To this day, Al-Madinah al-Munawwarah remains a place of immense spiritual significance, peace, and blessing, cherished by Muslims worldwide as a city of faith, mercy, and guidance.

Al-Masjid an-Nabawi ﷺ

Al-Masjid an-Nabawi or the Masjid of the Prophet (ﷺ) is the heart of Madinah and one of the three holiest mosques in Islam. It was established by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) upon his arrival in Madinah and served as a center of worship, learning, and community affairs. The mosque contains the blessed resting place of the Prophet (ﷺ), along with that of his companions Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (رضي الله عنه) and Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه).

Prophet ﷺ said in a Hadith that a prayer in my mosque (Al Masjid an Nabawi) is better than one thousand prayers elsewhere, except the Masjid al-Haram. (Sahih Muslim).

Ar-Rawḍah ash-Sharīfah

Ar-Rawḍah ash-Sharīfah and the blessed resting place of the Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), are among the most revered and sacred locations in Islam. The noble chamber houses the honored grave of the Prophet (ﷺ), alongside those of his closest companions, Abu Bakr as-Ṣiddīq (رضي الله عنه) and ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (رضي الله عنه). This blessed place is approached with utmost reverence, humility, and love, as Muslims offer salutations and prayers upon the Prophet (ﷺ), seeking closeness to Allah and renewing their commitment to the Sunnah. The resting place of Rasoolullah (ﷺ) stands as a timeless reminder of his mercy, guidance, and enduring legacy for all of humanity.

Jannat al-Baqīʿ

Jannat al-Baqīʿ is the historic cemetery of Madinah and the resting place of many members of the Prophet’s family (Ahl al-Bayt), his companions (رضي الله عنهم), and prominent early Muslims. The Prophet (ﷺ) frequently visited this graveyard and supplicated for those buried there.

Masjid Qubāʾ

Masjid Qubāʾ holds a unique and honored position in Islamic history as the first mosque established in Islam. It was founded by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) upon his arrival in the outskirts of Madinah during the blessed Hijrah, before he proceeded to the city itself. The Prophet (ﷺ) personally participated in laying its foundations, and the mosque quickly became a place of congregational prayer and spiritual gathering for the early Muslims. Over time, Masjid Qubāʾ has been expanded and renovated, yet it continues to symbolize sincerity, purity, and devotion to Allah.

The virtue of Masjid Qubāʾ is mentioned in the Qur’an in a verse widely understood by scholars to refer to it:

“A mosque founded on piety from the first day is more worthy for you to stand in.” (Surah at-Tawbah, 9:108)

The Prophet (ﷺ) also said that whoever performs ablution at home and prays in Masjid Qubāʾ receives the reward of an ʿUmrah.

Mount Uḥud

Mount Uḥud is the site of the Battle of Uḥud, where many noble companions were martyred, including Sayyiduna Hamzah ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib (رضي الله عنه). The Prophet (ﷺ) expressed love for this mountain, saying it is a mountain that loves us and is loved by us.
Threre is also a sacred cemetery near Mount Uḥud and it contains the graves of the martyrs of the Battle of Uḥud. Visitors reflect upon their sacrifices and make duʿāʾ for their forgiveness and elevated status in the Hereafter.

Masjid al-Qiblatayn

Masjid al-Qiblatayn is known as the “Masjid of the Two Qiblahs.” It is the place where the command was revealed to change the direction of prayer from Bayt al-Maqdis to the Kaʿbah in Makkah, marking a significant moment in Islamic history.

Masjid al-Jumuʿah

Masjid al-Jumuʿah is the place where the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) offered the first Friday (Jumuʿah) prayer in Madinah during his migration journey.
